The House passed the bill unanimously, and the Senate stood ready to approve it. But, Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma blocked the entire Senate from considering the important legislation that could have drastically reduced veteran suicides.
We may have lost this battle, but the war is long from over. IAVA and our grassroots supporters built the momentum needed to pass the bill unanimously out of the House, and that’s no small feat. Throughout 2014, IAVA helped bring the issue of veteran suicide out of the shadows and into the public consciousness.
Next year, we will be back with reinforcements when the next Congress arrives in January, and will pull out all the stops to quickly get this bill signed into law. We know what’s at stake: 22 veterans will die by suicide every day that Congress fails to act.
